Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT)

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a chronic but treatable medical condition that can affect a person’s physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, employment, and overall quality of life. OUD occurs when opioid use leads to clinically significant impairment or distress and is associated with changes in brain function that can make stopping opioid use difficult without support. Recovery is possible, and evidence-based treatment can help individuals regain stability and improve their overall health. [1,2]

Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) is considered one of the most effective treatments for opioid use disorder. OAT uses medications to reduce cravings, prevent withdrawal symptoms, and help individuals stabilize their lives while reducing the risks associated with illicit opioid use, including overdose, infectious diseases, and other health complications.
